CHEN Zirui (Jennifer)

Chen Zirui is an artist, designer, and photographer. She loves exploring cities on foot with a camera and seeking out hidden fragments of memories in urban landscapes. Her artwork captures more than an image, but also a specific sensation, a particular mood or sentiment that hopes to bring viewers back to their past memories reflecting on social issues. Jennifer attempts to create new perspectives on what people take for granted through images presented by various media and materials, offering viewers an interactive experience.

Neon signs used to be everywhere in Hong Kong, representing a technique, a city, and an era; a constant flicker of fluorescent tubes intertwine peoples’ collective memory in the city. However, as the signages have been taken off one by one, they are gradually fading in time. Have you ever noticed the curtain call of Hong Kong’s neon signs in such a busy life?

I try to slow down my steps in the city, finding and archiving the remaining neon signs. By featuring digital three-dimensional works with blinking colors, the viewers can observe from a close distance, having an interactive experience. In the
“Neon Love” mobile application, users are encouraged to explore the existing neon signs in the city by following the routes or joining related events. They can also share pictures and stories to piece together the neon memory of Hong Kong.
